Check Out: New Roots Cabin, at Yorkdale in Toronto
Roots new enhanced experience store, the Roots Cabin, at Yorkdale in Toronto. It's a new location that is approximately double the size of the old store. It opens to the public August 24 at 10 a.m. A key feature is the Customization Workshop, a world debut, where people can customize their Roots jacket design.
The Roots Cabin Experience
The ‘Roots’ character comes to life in the Roots Cabin. Inspired by the open air that allows us to escape the everyday, recharge and reconnect, the aesthetic of the redesign is organic, comfortable and open. At the heart of the redesign is the locally sourced millwork from expert craftspeople from across Ontario. Reclaimed wood and Ontario cedar surround the countless artifacts from the Roots Canada archives: an original ‘R’ sign from an early flagship store, the machine that made the first negative heel shoe and an array of celebrity Award Jacket replicas. “Each design choice in the space was influenced by our heritage: lighting fixtures inspired by our Leather Factory, the sign in our Footwear Department that hung over the door of our first store circa 1973, an oversized skylight that floods the store with natural light and transports our shoppers into the open air,” Gabel expands

The Customization Workshop
The Customization Workshop is an interactive, collaborative creative space that is digitally connected to The Roots Leather Factory (located only five kilometers away in Toronto, Canada). Tactile samples are paired alongside a digital interface, where customers can see their custom designs come to life on screen. Roots heritage styles such as The Award Jacket, The Student Pack, The Small Banff Bag and The Downtown Tote can all be customized and personalized. Customization Experts guide customers through the same process that Roots celebrity ambassadors have enjoyed over the decades. Monogramming is also available for all Roots leather good purchases.
The Lounge
The in store Lounge allows guests to relax on Roots leather furniture, charge their phones and enjoy a refreshment while they socialize outside the enhanced change room experience. The Lounge also doubles as an intimate spot for live performances and interactive listening sessions—it is set to become a new hub for Roots cultural events and underscores Roots longstanding commitment to Canadian music and culture. eCommerce converges with the physical store experience in the ‘endless aisle’ area, a space that gives customers the opportunity to order online, pick-up and try on their online orders, and browse through inventory on roots.com or any store throughout Canada.
About Roots
Established in 1973, Roots is Canada’s leading lifestyle brand known around the world for its quality leather goods, footwear, athletic wear and accessories. For more information visit www.roots.com.

Caring and Supporting Canada's Aging Population
Whether living at home, or at an independent living or long-term care facility, the growing problems faced by the elderly community can often be overwhelming and difficult to understand. But grasping and coming to terms with the physical and sometimes mental complexities weighing down on the aging Canadian population isn’t only burdensome on the person experiencing these issues. Oftentimes, it can be just as arduous on the families and caretakers of these individuals, as well.
“When considering how to best support an aging loved one, it can be strenuous to determine how to give the proper care they deserve,” says People in Motion Show Manager Sajid Rahman. “Mobility, for example, usually becomes an issue as we age. Our bodies grow tired, older, and we begin to lose elasticity which can often effect our total range of movement and productivity.” As per the Canadian Medical Association, nearly three in ten Canadians are family caregivers and the number of seniors expected to need help or care will double in the next 30 years.
“As a caregiver, it can often be gut-wrenching to watch a family member slowly lose their independence, and it can be challenging to even know what to do, where to start, or how to help,” adds Rahman. “What we do know is that we want to make a difference in the lives of seniors and help return a little bit of their independence when we can.”
To make an impact on an elderly person’s life, tasks don’t always have to be big to make a powerful difference. Support can be chores as simple as doing laundry, picking up groceries or cleaning the yard. Making it a point to visit on weekends, or when you have some spare time to assist them with their daily routines, can also help raise spirits and offer companionship.
As independence is slowly lost, it is important that your loved one feels in charge of their own environment. Offer help, but only do as is asked. Empower them to make their own decisions and have them do for themselves whenever possible. Be patient, listen and remember to always communicate and be vocal about the help you are offering. Mobility challenges can be frustrating, but with the proper care and tools, you can keep your vulnerable loved one out of harms way and far from dangerous situations such as falling. Additionally, some of the most impactful ways you can help support and care for an aging relative is by staying informed, and keeping up to date with the latest senior support, services and technology being offered. Shows like People in Motion, Canada’s largest disability exhibition, can help families discover the types of innovative technologies that will help significantly improve and ensure an excellent quality of life for older family members.
From wheelchairs to showering equipment and mobility aids, People in Motion will showcase a spectrum of products and services being offered.
“It is important for us to convey that People in Motion is not just a show exclusively for persons with disabilities,” says Rahman. “This meaningful and impactful exhibition is open to families, children and young adults who wish to learn more about how to best care for an aging parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, husband, wife – virtually anyone with an aging relative, which if you think about it, is all of us.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to see leading edge technology and learn about different services to help showgoers choose from a range of options best suited for their families and individual circumstances.
Admission to People in Motion is free and will take place May 26 and 27 at the Queen Elizabeth Building, Exhibition Place at 190 Princes’ Blvd, Toronto from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

May 10, 2016 - Kids’ CBC today announced that new animated series WANDERING WENDA (26x8) from Breakthrough Entertainment has been greenlit. Inspired by Margaret Atwood’s children’s book The Wide World of Wandering Wenda, the alliterative series follows young Wenda and her two best friends as they embark on magical adventures.Production by Breakthrough Entertainment and PIP Animation began in November 2015 and broadcast is slated for winter 2017.
“I'm delighted that Wenda has wandered her way into the wild world of television and wish her well on her adventures,” said author Margaret Atwood.

Microsoft Helping Canadian Students Save up to $200M with Free Office Software ~ #PR
MICROSOFT HELPING CANADIAN STUDENTS SAVE UP TO $200M WITH FREE OFFICE SOFTWARE
Canadian students from Kindergarten to Post-secondary are now empowered to do more
TORONTO, March 16 – Microsoft Canada today announced that over 4 million Canadian students and their families – from Victoria to St. John’s are eligible to access Office at no cost from their schools through their Office for Students program.
With Office for Students, Microsoft will help Canadian students and their families save up to $200 million, providing an unparalleled degree of access to the tools that Canadians students need to succeed, both at learning and as they prepare to enter the workforce.
A recent IDC study, Skill Requirements for Tomorrow’s Best Jobs, concluded that proficiency in the use of Office is seen as a fundamental skill by top-grossing, high-growth employers making Microsoft’s commitment all the more meaningful.
“We know that students who are proficient in Microsoft Office have a leg-up when entering the job-market,” said Marc Seaman, VP of Education at Microsoft Canada. “Our goal, with this offer, is to provide students with the tried and tested tools they need to help be successful today and in the future.”
Any student enrolled in a district school board or individual school which has purchased Microsoft Office for use by its faculty and staff can now log on and can download the full Office functionality across PCs and Macs, iPads, Android tablet, iPhones, and Android phones – at no cost for use at home and in the classroom. Parents and students can check their eligibility and download Office today by visiting Microsoft.ca/freeoffice.
“Microsoft recognizes that in today’s environment, barriers – whether they are technical or financial – that separate students from such tools must be overcome,” says Seaman. “By making Office for Students free of charge, we are removing that barrier and freeing students to choose the technology platform they want, based solely on preference.”
With the goal of arming their students with the Office advantage, several schools are already offering their students Office at no cost. One school district that made Office available to their students is Louis Riel School Division. Officials at this Manitoba board have noted that Office is changing the way their 10,000 students engage with technology.
“Hands down, Microsoft’s OneNote is probably one of the best programs for education,” said Clarke Hagan, Director of Information Systems at Louis Riel School Division. “It’s a real game changer for our classrooms, the software allows real time and non-real time collaboration that can actually be used to customize the instruction and provide for better learning.”
Another such school board is School District No. 42 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia - where they use Office to level the playing field for all students. “We have such a broad base of students from different socio-economic backgrounds,” David Vandergugten, Director of Education with School District No. 42. “The Office for Students program provides true equality of technology and of program delivery for every student.”
“We congratulate those schools and boards who have joined with us on this initiative,” said Seaman. “It builds on the longstanding commitment of Microsoft’s partnership with educators to help students in and outside of the classroom to realize their full potential with the benefit of the very best tools and technology.”
The Office for Students package that Microsoft provides to Students and Educators includes the latest version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher, 1TB of storage on OneDrive as well as Office Online for in-browser editing.
Students and parents may check their eligibility or encourage their school to opt-in at microsoft.ca/freeoffice or microsoft.ca/officegratuit.
