Keep Calm and Get Your Pap On ~ #getthepap

Hey Ladies, this is important so listen up.  We have it rough with so many health concerns we have to have this and that checked out.  Getting checked is uncomfortable but it is important.  VERY IMPORTANT.  It could save your life.  This October 21 to 27, 2013 is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week and the Canadian Cancer Society needs your help to spread the word!

I know, I know, who wants to talk about Pap tests.  It is uncomfortable and awkward - literally.  However, the reality is that we need to have it checked regularly because it is better to know in advance instead of hearing that it is too late.

I understand, as a mother, we tend to neglect ourselves. We drag our kids to see the necessary appointments and we bearly make any for ourselves.  According to Canadian Cancer Society, Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable with regular screening through Pap tests and with follow-up of abnormal results.  In Ontario this year, an estimated of 610 new cases would be diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 150 would died from the disease.  I think that is still one too many when it could almost be preventable.

Between 1981 and 2009, incidence rates for cervical cancer in Ontario declined by 38% and mortality rates declined by 58% in women aged 20 to 69.  This decline is due to widespread cervical cancer screening and advances in treatment.

It is recommended who are or ever have been sexually active should start having regular Pap tests by the time they're 21 years of age, every 3 years.

Remember, regular pap tests save lives and the best way to spread awareness is to start talking about the issue.  Ladies, talk to your doctor and get your screen done.

Disclosure - I received a variety of items to "Keep Calm and Get Your Pap" on.  No Monetary compensation.

  1. Yep, couldn't agree with you more. When I was in my 20s I had a scare and had pre cancerous results which just meant I needed to get a pap test every 6 months. Whatever it was, it cleared itself up, thank goodness. I'm always on my adult daughters to get their pap tests done, but you are right, we tend to neglect ourselves don't we.

  10. this is so important. I've just been and had mine done, I've not heard anything so hopefully all was well. I always tell my daughters to get it done (aged 21 to 34) but I'm not sure they do. It always seems so unlikely for young women but it isn't and the little test is a small price to pay for the certainty that all is well.

  15. It is very important to be checked on a regular basis. I used to have this test annually, until my doctor relaxed it to once every three years (unless a new penis is introduced). It's better to be safe than sorry.

  17. and men should also be checked for prostate cancer too! It an easy self test but few do it and it could save their lives. Just as women should also check for lumps in their breasts, so important but how many actually do do it regularly?
