Get My Printing Done Using My All-In-One Brother Printer ~ #Review

Over a month ago I was asked to review Brother's new MFC-J4510DW (RSP $199.73) printer which I was ecstatic to do.  I never had a 3 in 1 (print, scans, & fax) printer before and I think it is about time that I should have one at home.

I would have to say that I have some computer knowledge but not anywhere close to being called an expert. I am the one who would turn towards my husband or brother to help me troubleshoot any issues with my computer.

When setting up this computer I didn't want any help.  I want to do this on my own to get a feeling of how user friendly it is for the average person.  I am average...Seriously!

Brother Printer MFC-J4510DW

The setup from start to finish took me about an hour.  The instructions were mostly understandable.  I had to pause a few times to make sure I was doing it correctly.  One thing I wish it came with was a USB cable for the setup.  Technically you can install without it but it would be alot easier with it.  This USB cable is not your standard cable.  It needs a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) because it is meant for printers and thank goodness! I had one from the previous printer I had before.

I love how these new printers are Wifi compatible.  I did live in those dark ages where I had to connect my printer to my computer and my massive huge printer would sit under the desk because I didn't have any other place put it.  I like how I could be anywhere in the house with my laptop and if I needed to print I could do it without connecting my laptop to it.  No point of owing a laptop if I can't leave the room.  I think it is because it is using the Wifi that it has to think/process a little longer than direct connection so relax and don't panic, it will print.

It comes with 3 ink colour cartridges (Magenta, Cyan, Yellow) plus a larger black one.  This allows one to replace only the colour that needs to be replacing.  The high yield ink can print approximately 600 pages and the Super high yield ink can print 1200 pages.

I found the double sided printing fascinating, and isn't normally a feature you see on home printers in this price range  - kudos to Brother for thinking of this!  I have never printed one at home before today.  This is a great way to save money by printing on both sides.  I can't believe how much more expensive blank paper is than lined paper.

When I was printing with colour it came out nicely. The quality is top-notch, and coupled with a robust printer, I can see myself printing home photos, birthday cards, and other creative crafts with my girls.

The scanning was so easy to use.  I love the touch screen and I didnt need a manual to figure out how to use the scanner.  It scans in colour and it looks almost as good as the document I have scanned.  My requirement for scanning is simple - as long I can or the recipient can see the document I will be satisfied, which I am.

It does take a few more seconds than I normally am use to at work for it to print.  I had to keep on checking to see if it will print.  The other problem I find is that it is pretty noisy when it prints.  Don't plan to print with a sleeping baby in the same room.

The one drawback I found strange was that you can only put one sheet in at a time for manual feed. I personally don't use manual feed that much except the odd occasion for making labels but planning to print more than a few sheets, I would suggest to put the paper in the regular tray to print. It does have faxing capabilities but I personally have no need for it since I scan more than fax. I would not be surprised if one day it will be obsolete and everyone will be scanning and emailing documents.

Overall this printer meets my needs and is perfect for home use. It has everything I need and is very easy to use once I had it all set up.

  2. I love Brother printers -- they are so reliable and last forever! I find is so annoying that printer cables seem to never be included in the box. At the very least, they should make that more clear on the box so that you don't get back home and then realize that you need to run back to the store...

  6. Printing on BOTH sides of the paper, now that's amazing. Printers really have come a long way in the past 5 years alone. My printer is 4 years old and it cannot do that so I am impressed!

  10. I always get my husband to set up my computer equipment, but after reading your review I'm thinking that maybe I could set up my next printer. This Brother computer sounds wonderful. The WiFi compatibility would be really helpful for my son, so he could print things out without having to attach his laptop to the printer.

  15. I love the fact that it prints on both sides of the paper - mine actually does that too but only when I've worked out which way around & up and down the first page has to be put back in - and I often don't get it right unfortunately.
