Leave Burt & Ernie Alone ~ #Life

Sesame Street was one of my most watched TV shows while growing up.  I enjoyed watching the characters teaching me the letters, words, how to count, and listening to them break off into a tune.  They were just puppets created by the infamous Jim Henson who has brought many happy childhood memories.  Then over the years as an adult hearing a debate if Burt and Ernie were gay or straight.  Seriously?  Why are people debating about the sexual orientation on two puppets that have no pulse?  I thought they were brothers but that is just me.  As I quote "Sesame Street and the company of founder Jim Henson has insisted many times that the orange and yellow pals are neither straight nor gay nor transgender or anything else: "The remain puppets, and do not have sexual orientation."

So there, leave them alone.  Stop taking something so pure and innocent and throwing in something that is not there in the first place.  Don't take something like love and friendship and warp it into a joke.  If they are gay or not, who cares.

  2. I thought they weer based on the Odd Couple television show, just two divorcee's needing help making rent. Problem with people not knowing what came before.

  3. I love that cover, which came out after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the parts of DOMA that discriminated against gay marriage.

I agree with that there's too much fuss about what other people (and puppets!) are doing and who with.

  4. Seasame Street has been getting attacked for more than just these boys - remember the uproar over Katy Perry? and criticism over political storylines, cookie monster encouraging eating disorders? etc. Seems like there will always be someone that complains!

  5. I agree. And while on the subject, 70s era 'Street was way better than today's junk that they're producing.

  6. Beautiful post, that's something that I was not paying attention to, and it's true. Just to leave them alone and preserve the innocence of the characters.

  9. I too think it is ridiculous that people are debating whether the show is portraying Ernie & Bert as being gay. There are more important things to be concerned about!

  17. I'm so glad I came across this post today. It's pride weekend this vancouver and I cannot agree with you more. I don't understand how people can make a big debate over something that doesn't need a big debate over.
